Computers/Software Add Only 2.2% to Traditional Media Spending — Internet Spending Jumps by 44.35%

Just at it tops may other lists, Microsoft Corporation lead the Computers & Software Industry (hardware and software only) as the leader in advertising expenditures. Even in the face of its court battle, the company increased its advertising outlay by 13.1% over the previous year - from $200.4 million in 1998 to $226.8 million in 1999 - according to Competitive Media Reporting (CMR), the nation's leading provider of advertising intelligence. While the top 4 parent companies all increased their individual advertising expenditure by more than the 10.3% average increase, the rest of the category either lagged behind that growth or lowered their spending levels. On the Internet, the category ranked as the top spender coming in at $663.1 million. While this represents an increase of only 44.35%, that is because the medium is already heavily used. In fact, the industry accounted for 34.72% of all Internet advertising. The industry outspent the Retail sector in Internet spending by 138.2%.
