Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser are Kings of Beer Advertising
The Category's 4.7% Lags Behind the 10.3% Overall Increase

Despite modest increases, and even a decline in ad spending on behalf of one of its flagship brands, Anheuser-Busch remained the king of beers - at least in terms of advertising expenditures according to Competitive Media Reporting (CMR), the nation's leading provider of advertising intelligence. Overall, the parent spent just 3.9% more in 1999 than in 1998 - but managed to outspend Philip Morris (Miller Brewing Co.) by 92.8%. By combining A-B's spending for Budweiser and Bud Light, the king's strength really comes through; the two together put 80.4% more dollars behind building their name and driving sales than Coors and Coors Light combined ($122.0 million, a 21.0% increase over 1998). The category lagged behind advertisers as a whole notching only a 4.7% increase as compared to the overall 10.3% jump.
