Soft Drink Advertising Outpaces Overall Growth
The Category's 14.1% bests the 10.3% Overall Increase

Reversing a trend of falling behind overall growth for the last two years, the soft drink industry regained its footing and bolstered its advertising expenditures by 14.1% over 1998 figures according to Competitive Media Reporting (CMR), the nation's leading provider of advertising intelligence. The industry spent $649.8 million in 1999 as compared to $569.6 million in 1998. Overall, advertisers increased their outlay by 10.3%.

While Coke and Pepsi continue to slug it out on the supermarket shelves in the battle for customers, Coca-Cola, as both a parent company and brand, leads the pack in advertising expenditures. The Coca-Cola Company outspent Pepsico by 31.7% and Coca-Cola Classic bested Pepsi Cola by 57.4%. Despite a strong increase, 35.4%, from Cadbury Schweppes PLC, the company ranked a distant third, 31.5% behind Pepsi Co. Demonstrating the strength of the Coke brand, Coca-Cola Enterprises, manufacturers and sellers of Coca-Cola licensed products, ranked fourth, albeit well behind the top three, among industry parent companies.
