Pfizer Tops List of Pharmaceutical Ad Spenders
 
Spending $376.3 million in advertising through the first three quarters of 2000, Pfizer Inc. was the top ad spender in the pharmaceutical industry. Behind Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson ranked second, spending $318.1 million. As for the top spending brands, Vioxx spent $139.1 million and Prilosec spent $101.1 million.

Overall, the pharmaceutical sector showed considerable growth from the first three quarters of 1999 ($2.87 billion) to the same time period of 2000 ($3.49 billion). The category increase of 21.6% outpaced the overall advertising expenditure increase of 15.9%.
